ASSESSMENTS: POVERTY GUIDELINES
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS OF GARFIELD TOWNSHIP, CLARE COUNTY
To be eligible, a person shall do all the following on an annual basis:
Be an owner of and occupy as a homestead the property for which an exemption is requested.
File a claim with the supervisor or board of review, accompanied by federal and state income tax returns for all persons residing in the homestead, including any property tax credit returns filed in the immediately preceding year or in the current year.
Produce a valid driver’s license or other form of identification
Produce a deed, land contract, or other evidence of ownership of the property for which an exemption is requested.
Meet the federal poverty income standards as defined and determined annually by the United States office of management and budget.
The application for an exemption shall be filed after January 1, but before the last scheduled day of protest of the board of review.
Applicant shall have applied for and exhausted all other avenues of relief before tax relief will be considered.(Property tax credit, SSI, AFDC, Food stamps, etc.) Applicant to provide proof.
Assets of all occupants shall not exceed $2,000., Equity in the homestead for which an exemption is requested will not be counted toward the $2,000 asset level.
